Medical Mycology: Fungous Diseases of Men and Other Mammals
نویسنده
چکیده
This work has been hailed as the first comprehensive review of this world problem and a survey of its content reveals that this statement is not exaggerated. The author by training and experience is well fitted for such a task and has long had a major interest in this subject. Medical practitioners will have an especial interest in the excellent chapters on diagnosis and treatment while those interested in the sociologic viewpoint will find decided interest in the chapters relating to the economic, domestic, and ethical aspects of abortion. A valuable addition is found in Appendix A which gives state statutes relating to abortion in the United States. Citizens of Connecticut will not be especially proud to learn that their fair state is the only one which prohibits the use of contraceptives. To the reviewer's mind this work is indispensable to those who wish to keep their knowledge on this subject, in all its important aspects, up to date. Chaos isn't chaos any more. Or, at least portions of that delectable region have been surveyed, mapped, and greatly improved by a rather ruthless program of slum-clearance. That great field of mycology, wherein he who would might seek, and seeking find; and above all enjoy the satisfaction of attaching a name (even his own) to the object found and thereby assure himself a place in scientific record, is not what it once was. For in this text the author has given us reason to hope that there is, after all, a limit even to the fungi related to medical conditions. To cite but one example from among and Sphaerotilus bovis are merely other names for Actinomyces bovis; all of which shows what a fertile imagination coupled with a distaste for searching the literature may accomplish. From which it may reasonably be concluded that many "n. sp." described have been neither new nor species.
